The budgie is often refered to as a 'parakeet'. The normal budgie has a bright green plumage on the chest. The wings are a mix of green with black. The heads of the budgie has black lines covering a yellow head. There are several variations to this basic budgerigar, including yellow, blue (cobalt), violet, and albino.

Cuttlebones as well as chewable toys are essential to keep their beaks trimmed. Their beak grows three inches every year.

Parakeets have sensitive immune systems and should be watched closely for diarrhea, weight loss or changes in behavior.

 Interesting Facts:

¨ Baby parakeets fly out of the nest after 4 to 5 weeks.

¨ They can start breeding when they are 6 months old.

¨ Parakeets change feathers every year.

¨ Parakeets can learn to talk. A male can learn several hundred words and female can learn about a hundred.

¨ If a parakeet throws up at you it means he considers you a family member, and he is trying to feed you.
